In the literature, there are various classifications of guinea pig breeds. One of the most common classifications is the division of guinea pigs into three large groups – long-haired, short-haired and rare. Modern breeders also apply the following option:
- English selfies (English Self) – guinea pigs of a continuous color (monophonic)
- Longhair (not selfies) (Sheltie, Peruvian, Coronet, Texel, Alpaca, Merino)
- Shorthair (woolen) (Neighbor, not Selfs) – (agouti, American and English baptists, Abyssinian, Rex, etc.).
- Rare breeds are the so-called new breeds, which are still quite rare.
Gamma colors in guinea pigs are also very diverse, they can be completely monophonic (white, black, buff, red, chocolate), agout (natural color), variegated, two-tricolor and even Dalmatians.
Selfies are one of the ancient representatives of the pig family. They were in Britain in the 19th century. A distinctive feature of selfies is the monophonic (solid) coat color (white, black, brown, beige, purple, etc.). The eyes are often dark, but there are also red ones. In the photo, the guinea pig breed English selfie.
You can say that these are the only family rodents.
Abyssinian (rosette) guinea pigs
The Abyssinian breed is one of the most popular. For the first time, Abyssinians appeared in England in 1861 as a result of a mutation of the wool gene, and in 1866 the first individuals were introduced to Europe.
The characteristic features of the Abyssinian breed are the special growth of the coat, due to which rosettes are formed. Sockets must be in the correct shape, have clear boundaries. The total number of outlets is 8-10, maximum 12. Their location is prescribed in the standard: 2 on the nose, 1-2 on the shoulders, 4 on the sides and 4 on the back of the body. In addition, they must be symmetrical. The number of outlets can reach 30 pieces – these are no longer considered pedigree. Nearby rosettes form crests or crests. Any colors are possible. The hair reaches 3-4 cm in length, it is softer in females than in males. The body of the Abyssinian pigs is strong, muscular, moderately long. The shoulders and chest are wide, the back is straight, the back is rounded. Paws are straight and short. The head is short, round, with large ears, wide shiny eyes and a slightly elongated nose.
Mumps are unpretentious and benevolent towards humans. In the vast majority of cases, Abyssinians get used to their hands very quickly, get along well with children. Of the minuses, extraordinary gluttony can be noted, so the owner should be extremely attentive to the number of cows in the bowl of his pet, so as not to overfeed him. Excessive food intake results in obesity and heart disease.
Peruvian guinea pigs
This is a fairly old breed, known in Europe since the mid-19th century. The coat grows in front, in her eyes she has eyes. Ideally, there should be only 2 sockets at the bottom. The length of the coat should be at least 15 cm, and for Peruvians of the show class it can reach 50 cm.
Alps are very similar to guinea pigs. There are two sockets on the back.
Shelters were recognized in England in 1973, and in the USA in 1980.
Long hair, which grows strictly in appearance from the muzzle down, is soft and silky. Unlike alpacas, the island does not have a single outlet. There are different colors.
There is a socket that looks like a crown.
Texel is one of the most beautiful breeds known since the mid 80s of the last century. Texels are distinguished by long, dense hair, breaking up into clearly formed curls, a long train and fluffy tanks. The length of the coat is 12-18 cm. Large expressive eyes adorn the rounded muzzle. Texels are calm, friendly and sociable.
In search of such luxurious wool, special efforts are required. In fact, it does not require daily combing to choose hay and sawdust from wool, a lot of time is not required. Animals that do not take part in exhibitions usually have their hair shortened.
Curly hair grows the same way.
Agouti are the ancestors of all modern breeds. Each animal’s hair has different shades at the base and at the end.
Head, paws, dyeing in the main color without using other shades, only the body has a so-called mixture of salt with pepper, when hair of one color is mixed with hair of a different color.
They look like Rex, but their coat is a little shorter and softer. Thick, dense and elastic, straight (or slightly wavy), the hair stands on end throughout the body of the pig, it feels like plush to the touch. Pictured is a Gold-White American Teddy
Stiff, dense, slightly curly hair about 1.7 cm long. The hairs stand on end, which creates a plush effect. Color options can be any.
A smooth-haired pig, however, there is a difference – there is a rosette on the sacrum, and on the back the wool is collected in a kind of comb from standing vertical hair.
Smooth-haired pigs with a rosette on the top of the head. Distinguish between English and American baptists. In the American color, the sockets should contrast with the color of the main color.
Satin Guinea Pigs

The type of wool "Satin" is found in all short-haired and long-haired breeds. The most rare are animals of golden, lilac and buffalo color.

In the face of a person who has decided to breed a guinea pig and get acquainted with all the various breeds, a difficult question arises: how to choose “your breed” from all this variety?
Surely, many want to have a rare breed pig at home. So, bald guinea pigs are very popular and popular today. They require mandatory detention and conditions of detention. It will be much higher than on guinea pigs of less rare breeds. In addition, provided that the family has everything you need to take part in exhibitions, find your loved one, a suitable partner for mating, etc.
